Let's Take a Census
During my recent visit to Poggioreale, a former mayor of Poggioreale asked me how many descendants of Poggioreale immigrants were living in North America. After 20 years of gathering data on these families, I know that the number is large, but with the help of all of the family historians out there, I think we can come up with a pretty good estimate
Most people who live in Poggioreale today believe that the largest number of Poggiorealesi live in Australia, where they number about 4000. However, I believe that our numbers here in North America are much larger, although we are much more widely dispersed after more than 100 years. If you would like to take part in this "census", please send me the names of your ancestors who were born in Poggioreale and immigrated to North America, along with your best estimate of the total number of their descendants, indicating how many you think may still be living. It's not necessary to include the names of the descendants or any other information, just their number
Here are the latest figures as of March 2013. These are totals, both living and dead. I'll try to give separate figures later, but I think about 95% are still living. I've made some very conservative estimates for families that have not yet checked in. Some couples who had large families have been omitted from this list because many of their descendants are included under other couples, due to intermarriages among the families.
